9640 - Acacia/Gum Arabic Tree (Acacia senegal)

The resin/gum from this tree is often referred to as Gum Arabic, but the actual tree for that is Acacia vera. The flowers of the acacia species are used in rituals and blends for protection and psychic powers. Few people know this is the tree which produces the flavoring for most popular soda pops including the top two sellers. It is a beautiful tree with a flattened crown and attractive grey-green foliage. Will grow to 30' outside in zones 8-10 or can be container raised inside. 3 seeds $2.50

This resin is used for both spirituality and purification and can be added to any incense for those purposes.

Acacia are ancient plants, not used as much in magick today as they once were, however, with the ease of growing these Australian natives, where they are known as Wattles, the use of the flowers and wood could easily make a comeback. Almost all acacia make good container plants inside and all can be raised outside in warmer climates. You can find more species in our Acacia Garden.

HR101 Agrimony (Agrimonia eupatoria)

Agrimony is also known as Church Steeples, Cocklebur, Garclive, Philanthropos, Sticklewort and Stickwort. In addition to the magickal uses of protection and sleep, the leaves, stems and flowers produce yellow dye and the plant has long been used in place of tea in Europe. Flowers, leaves and stems are harvested when the plants are in bloom and brewed into a tea with a delightful somewhat apricot-like flavour which can be sweetened with licorice or honey. Agrimony is a hardy, graceful perennial reaching 3-5' making it very good for a sunny border. It has thin, tapering spikes of small, star-shaped yellow flowers and mid-green leaves with serrated edges. The flowers are apricot-scented and are a wonderful attractant for bees and butterflies. It prefers full sun to light shade in ordinary well drained soil. For best results, the seeds should be planted in late summer or early fall, although they can also be planted in late winter or spring. 10 seeds $1.75

H550 Alfalfa (Medicago sativa)

Alfalfa, also known as Buffalo Herb or Lucerne or Purple Medic, produces a large amount of nectar which is highly attractive to many species of butterflies, including the Orange Sulphur, Eastern Black Swallowtail and many others as well as to many species of bees. Honey bees produce excellent crops of high quality honey from alfalfa nectar. Alfalfa seeds are kept in the cupboard to protect the home from hunger and poverty. They can also be used in money and prosperity blends. Leaves and seeds make a tea with a somewhat bland taste which some describe as the "taste of new mown hay". It can be mixed with red clover, mints or lemon verbena and sweetened with honey to make it more palatable. The tea can be used to treat arthritis, boils, digestive disorders, urinary tract infections and bowel disorders. The chlorophyll in this brew will also counteract bad breath. Eating the sprouts in salads is also very beneficial. It is very high in vitamins A, D, E, G and K as well as 16 important minerals. It is a hardy perennial with many small flowers growing off of the stems and grows well in full or partial sun in well drained soil. The plants averages 1-3 ft. in height. small package $1.75

H008 Alkanet (Anchusa officinalis)

Alkanet is a purification herb although it has been used, occasionally, for prosperity. The root has also been used as a colouring agent for lip balms and a root decoction is said to have blood cleansing properties. It has also been used as a treatment for rabies and as a diuretic. It is a pretty plant with violet-blue flowers for cutting as well as an attraction for bees. The flowers are followed by tiny nut-like fruits. 7 seeds $2.00

Allspice is used in money and healing mixtures. It can be burned, by itself on charcoal, to attract money.

HE20 - Aloe, Cape (Aloe spicata) - Powdered - $5.50/ounce

Aloes are protective. An Aloe Vera plant in the house is said to protect against accidents and evil. Cape aloes can be added to any protective blend.

H521 Althea (Althaea officinalis)

This plant is also known as Marshmallow, Mortification Root, Sweet Weed and Wymote. In magick, it is used protection and to increase psychic powers. It has been used in the Middle East by boiling the fresh, young tops, then frying with onions and butter. It has been commonly used throughout France as a spring tonic and also as a remedy for sore throats and as a laxative. An ointment made from the root is said to help heal any type of sore. It is believed that an infusion made from the leaves will benefit sufferers of cystitis and urinary tract infections. Leaves and roots can be cooked and eaten and are said to be a immune system stimulant. It is a hardy, upright perennial growing to 4' tall. It bears lovely, edible, lavender-pinkish-white flowers and heart-shaped, lobed and toothed velvety leaves. It prefers full sun and a moist soil. The seeds should be sown in spring and thinned or transplanted to about 1' apart. During the second season, the plants should be thinned, again, to about 2' apart. This plant is not particularly suited to growing indoors. 20 seeds $1.95

Alyssum are used for protection purposes - against fascination, and are said to have the power to "expell charms". They are also said to be able to calm an angry person and can, therefore, be used in any blends to moderate anger or to bring peace to the house.

FL010 Joseph's Coat (Amaranthus)

Amaranthus is used for healing and protection and is said to confer invisibility if you wear a wreath of this on your heat. This very hardy form of amaranthus grows quickly to 3' with richly variegated foliage. It likes dry, sunny locations. Sow the seeds on the surface of the soil and it will germinate in about 10-15 days. 50 or more seeds $1.95

HR301 Angelica (Angelica archangelica)

Angelica, also known as Archangel or Masterwort, is used as a protection and exorcism or uncrossing herb. Even growing the plant is considered protective. An oil made from the stems and roots is used in flavoring liqueurs and stems are often candied and used in decorating cakes. Leaves and seeds are used to make a very light tea tasting somewhat like celery which is best when sweetened with honey. An infusion can be made by pouring a pint of water over an ounce of the bruised root that is said to create an aversion to alcohol and relieve flatulence. It has been said to help in cases of delayed menstruation. Although angelica is common in meadows and pastures throughout the country, the only one with medicinal values is archangelica. It is very hard to tell this plant apart from its cousin, so carefully check your source. It is a biennial plant that is often grown as an annual. It will grow to a height of 4-6' and prefers partial shade and a moist, slightly acidic soil. Seeds should be sown in early fall and transplant seedlings in spring before the root becomes too established. There should be about a square yard between these plants. It is a beautiful garden plant with purple-green leaves and white and pink flowers that have a sweet honey smell. 50 seeds $1.75

HR310 Anise (Pimpinella anisum)

Anise, also called Anneys or Aniseed, is a multipurpose magickal herb being used for protection, meditation, uncrossing and purificiation as well as to call forth spirits during rituals and used in dream pillows to promote peaceful sleep free of nightmares. The leaves and seeds are used to flavor licorice and it is delicious in salads. Seeds are often used in applesauce, cakes, breads, soups and stews. Anise tea is one of the best herbal teas that you could ever hope to make. It has a very pleasant sweet licorice like taste and delightful aroma and needs no sweeteners or other flavorings. Besides the delicious flavor, the tea is said to be helpful in the treatment of asthma, colic, bronchitis and nausea. The seeds also contain the chemical photanethole which is similar to the female hormone estrogen. The effects of this chemical helps relieve the discomfort of menopause. It is also said to be helpful in promoting milk production in nursing mothers. A cup of Anise tea just before bedtime will help you rest better and sleep soundly. To make the tea, crush 1 teaspoon of seeds and place in a cup of boiling water. Steep for 20 minutes. The seeds have also been used for ages as a mousetrap bait, it is said that mice cannot resist the aroma. Anise is an annual growing to about 15" to 2', preferring to grow in cultivated soil with compost worked in and full sun. Sow the seeds from spring to late summer. If you are in a hurry for the plants to sprout, soak them overnight in warm water and pour boiling water into the drill before sowing. They can also be grown in a seed tray maintained at about 70 degrees F. They should be thinned or transplanted about 9" apart. Anise self seeds so if growing out of doors, be prepared for a bumper crop the second year. These are excellent plants for growing indoors. 50-100 seeds $1.75

2222 Siberian Crabapple/Flowering Crabapple (Malus baccata)

This tree is grown for both its fruit and ornamental value and is one of the few fruit varieties adapted for bonsai use. Fruits are red or yellow and about 1 cm in size. It is very hardy and easy to grow. 20 seeds $1.95

HE37 - Asafoetida - (Ferula foetida) - Powdered - $8.00/ounce

This is called "Devil's Dung" for a very good reason - it "STINKS"! However, it is very powerful in exorcism, protection and purification mixes. I don't recommend using it in a closed space, though. It is also sometimes used to get rid of people you want out of your life - those you want to leave you alone - by sprinkling some in their yard, on their doorstep, etc.

Aspen (Populus spp.)

Aspen (Populus spp.) is used in anti-theft formulae as well as to give one eloquence. The bark would be most appropriate for these purposes. Although the Balm of Gilead Buds below are not the original ones used in magick (Commiphora opobalsamum). they are an acceptable substitute. They are used in love, protection and healing mixtures as well as for manifestation workings.
