PaganCrafts Oil & Water Recipes Page

Running a close second to incense in my house, are oils. For me, that usually means infused, but occasionally, a really great e.o. Fragrance oils, for my household, are simply out of the question, which I don't think is all that bad an ideal for magickal work - since f.o.'s are mainly chemicals.

Oils by themselves, blended into magickal formulae, used in the making of incense, soaps, bath salts or any number of other applications are a very important part of our magickal works.

Most of the recipes I have for oils do not have specific amounts. This is because everyone is different and what pleases me may not please you. However, they are listed in order with the one used in largest amounts first and the one with the smallest amounts last. I make sure that I have a notebook beside me, and I note every single drop that goes into the blend. I start with equal amounts of each, and the add more of the different oils - starting with the first one - until I reach a blend that suits me. By doing this, you actually have your own special oil blend since the chances are pretty slim that we all will wind up with exactly the same amounts of each oil.

If you need any help on these, just ask. The blends you mix you can use in soap or candles or whatever. These are eo's and fo's that you mix so.... have fun. :)

Oh, and remember, do NOT use oils directly on your skin. If you are going to do that, dilute them first in a good quality carrier oil. Mary can probably give more info on that. :)

In regards to the use of Ambergris, one hopes one is using an artificial scent as ambergris is only obtained by killing sperm whale.

Also, the animal is protected and even the purchase of ambergris would be illegal in most cases. The synthetics are fine and some decent bouquets exist as well. Though I find the synthetics a bit truer of fragrance more often than the bouquets so I use them. The last animal essentials I've owned or used was civit and musk. Both of which are still legal to my knowledge, at least they still was way back then. However, if you do not like using products which cost an animal it's life (or likely did...As I understand these can be extracted without actually killing the animal) then I urge you to avoid them too. Consider again the alternatives of synthetics and bouquets (by the by, a bouquet is a blend of true essential oils which are combined to smell like something else other than what it actually is).

Ambergris is, for want of a better expression, whale puke, and believe me, whales are not killed for their puke.

It is gelatinous, and used to be found on beaches etc, but in these more enlightened times, there are many aromachemicals which work better.

Not to say that your wrong Mary, but from what I understand ambergris is extracted from the sex glands of the sperm whale. I know of several occult books that have said this. So naturally I am a little confused. However, I do know that the substance did wash up on the shores, that much I do recall from my readings. All the dictionary says about it is that it is a waxy substance secreted by "certain" whales. Since it defines it as a secretion I don't think it would be regurgitation, but hey, you never know. GRIN Anyone have references for sure as to which whales and secreted from where?

Spermaceti is a waxy substance derived from inside the head of the Sperm Whale. The whale needs it for buoyancy as well as sonar. It was used in lotions to add an emollient, moisturizing element. An acceptable substitute would be jojoba oil.

Ambergris is a byproduct of the whale's inability to digest cuttlefish beaks. It is produced by the whale's intestine to protect against the sharp bones. It is expelled by the whale, and is found washed up on beaches...very foul-smelling, disgusting stuff, until it is properly aged and diluted.

It is possible to find true ambergris that does not involve slaughtering the whale, a company called Medini sells the perfume. It has a smokey, musky scent.

Other whale by-products like spermaceti are banned in the United States.

The following information is quoted from: Dictionary of Organic Compounds

"Fragrance Raw Materials -

The emphasis on the preservation of wildlife and endangered species in recent years has caused some countries to ban the use of certain animal products. In the United States, the use of ambergris was banned some years ago.

{{{{{{{{{More than 96% was a by-product of the whaling industry.]}}}}}} (Emphasis mine - Sierra)

Both political considerations and conservation have created many uncertainties as to future supplies of essential oils. For conservation reasons, some countries have blocked further exports of certain materials, and others have begun to regulate export prices. These factors have helped create the uncertainties that abound in natural products and serve to motivate the development of synthetic replacements. In many ways, synthetic materials have better chemical and olfactory uniformity than natural products, as they are not subject to ever-changing weather conditions and natural phenomena. Nevertheless, the use of natural products to achieve certain richness and natural character in perfumes is of paramount importance. "

This is an excellent site - a scientific resource.
